Hydrogen: energy future and industrial opportunities

Hydrogen: pillar of the energy future and new industrial opportunities.

With the world increasingly geared toward energy transition and reduction of CO2 emissions, hydrogen is emerging as one of the key technologies to drive this change. In both the energy and mobility sectors, hydrogen offers innovative and environmentally friendly solutions in line with the sustainability goals set by the European Union.

The main industrial applications of hydrogen

  1. Energy sector: green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, is gaining importance as an energy carrier for decarbonizing hard-to-electrify industries such as steel and heavy industry. In addition, hydrogen's ability to store energy makes it essential for stabilizing power grids increasingly dependent on renewables such as wind and solar.

  2. Mobility and the automotive sector: hydrogen fuel cells are a promising alternative to battery electric vehicles, especially for heavy-duty vehicles such as trucks and buses, where short charging times and ample range are essential. Hydrogen is expected to play a central role in long-term sustainable mobility, particularly for long-distance transportation and the shipping industry.

  3. Chemical industry: hydrogen is already a key element in the production of ammonia, methanol and various industrial chemicals. With the transition to cleaner chemistry, the use of green hydrogen can significantly reduce the environmental impact of these processes.

Investment and strategic relevance in Europe
Europe is betting big on hydrogen as part of the European Green Deal, with the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Many European countries have already launched national hydrogen plans, with projects aimed at developing a robust hydrogen economy. These include infrastructure for green hydrogen production and distribution, support for fuel cell technologies, and integration with existing industrial sectors.

Our commitment and next steps
In the context of this energy revolution, Foma is committed to exploring new hydrogen-related opportunities. We recently visited Hydrogen Expo in Piacenza, and we will be visiting Hydrogen Technology Expo in Hamburg where we will have the opportunity to meet with partners and industry leaders to discuss strategic collaborations and how industry can benefit from the integration of hydrogen technologies.

We are confident that hydrogen will be an essential part of the future, and we intend to be a key player in this change.
